Afterlife Research, Quantum Physics, Understanding Reality
Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
There, let the way appear, steps unto heaven;
all that thou sendest me, in mercy given;
angels to beckon me, nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
– Sarah Flower Adams (1805-1848) “Nearer My God to Thee” (1841)
The most astonishing fact about the modern physics community is that so many bright, well-educated people are delighted to spend their entire careers immersed in studying only five percent of what they themselves know actually exists. Only five percent! How is such an obviously nonsensical pursuit even possible? Do they ever worry about the potential meaninglessness of it all? Does it ever occur to any of them that whatever they are learning about that tiny bit of reality that they are allowed by their gatekeepers to study might be tossed all awry in an instant by the most of reality that they are required to ignore? It is as if they are ignoring your entire house, its walls and roof, its dishes and furniture, and everything else in it except perhaps the kitchen counter by the window, the one that holds the sink and faucet, and also your back door right beside it. Those bits happen to be painted purple perhaps, and purple is their color of choice, so they rigorously study that five percent of your entire home. The whole rest of it, they disdainfully call “dark”, and they ignore it all. Or if you don’t like my using your home to represent all of reality, then let’s use something larger. Let’s use your entire hometown, and let’s assume that your nice big central cathedral is about five percent of its downtown buildings in size and weight. So. physicists will study just that.
All right, you are saying to me now. What gives? Roberta, have you lost your mind? Well, perhaps. But I don’t know how else you would describe the corner into which mainstream physicists have willfully painted themselves Physicists tell us that only about five percent of reality consists of ordinary matter and energy of the sort that they now choose to limit themselves to studying. In our illustrations above, we have used your house, or perhaps your hometown, to represent all of reality; and we have arbitrarily chosen out five percent of those examples of reality to represent what physicists consider it to be acceptable for them to study. They tell us that the other ninety-five percent of reality affects the material five percent in various ways, which is how we know that it even exists; but since it will not interact with photons of material light, we cannot see it or otherwise materially detect it. It is neither matter nor its correlate energy, so it is “dark” to us, and we therefore choose to ignore it.
I don’t know how you feel about what physicists are doing, but I consider it to be ridiculous! Physicists have claimed to own the study of reality for thousands of years, since literally time out of mind; but, oops, now lately it looks as if most of reality may in fact not be made out of conventionally visible matter after all. And, frankly, we now have a lot of information about what actually is going on, beyond the fact that “something” is causing the universe to expand, and that “something” is a whole lot of non-material matter and energy which together makes up about 95% of reality. There are two ways that physicists could have treated this amazing new information when it first was discovered. The correct and open-minded scientific way to try to understand what is actually happening, of course, would have been to seek whatever independent new information they could find about this amazing phenomenon. They could have said, Wow! How interesting! And eventually, in some more enlightened century, scientists are going to be doing just that. But instead of acting like genuine scientists, in the early twentieth century, the Luddite scientific gatekeepers of that day declared physics to be the study of just ordinary matter exclusively.
And that is the reason, and the ONLY reason, why the humiliating terms “dark matter” and “dark energy” even exist at all. They are placeholders, waiting for a more enlightened day, when trained physicists working within the scientific community will at last be allowed to study non-material reality. Until then, we are stuck with mere hobbyist scientists to provide our explanations of what the “dark matter” that physicists say makes up about 27% of reality, and “dark energy” that they tell us makes up an astonishing 68% of reality, actually are. Because, yes of course, all of that supposedly “dark stuff” is SOMETHING, rather than nothing, and actually it teems with light and life! As you know that of course it must, if you pause and think about it for even half a second. All of nature is amazingly spare and efficient in the infinite number of ways that it operates, and we can see that plainly everywhere and in everything that exists, all around us! It is ridiculous in this breathtakingly complex and meticulous universe for us even to imagine that 95% of what actually exists is just a big, deliberate mass of nothing whose only purpose is to push the material universe gradually ever bigger. What, have you ever actually believed that might possibly be true? Could any scientific mind ever have encompassed the possibility of so much entirely empty dark matter and energy ever coming into being with the sole purpose of pushing the material universe larger? Good grief, are you kidding me?
The greatest physicist of the twentieth century may eventually be seen to have been Max Planck, who discovered the amazing primacy of consciousness. In 1931, Dr. Planck said, “I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness! Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.” And that turns out to be precisely right! We hobbyist scientists who have spent a lot of time over the past half-century or so in trying to understand the greater reality in which we find ourselves have felt free to study not just the fruits of every scientific discipline, but also a tremendous body of wonderful communications from those who are not actually dead after all, the best of which communications were received at the end of the nineteenth century and during the first third of the twentieth century. Near-death experiences and deathbed testimonies also have been of some considerable, if limited, evidentiary value, and the fact that many people over the years have learned to astral-travel with memories of the event has given us amazing information as well. Together, the best thing about all this vast collection of information is how wonderfully consistent it all is across time and across categories of evidence! This didn’t have to be the case. The evidence didn’t all have to fit together. But it does fit together, and perfectly! Together, all these bits of information from so many different sources that are also widely spaced in time and location are giving us an astonishingly clear and complete picture of our own eternal lives that are lived within a truly amazing greater reality that is not remotely “dark” at all!
We live each of these very brief earth-lives of spiritual learning in this little material universe that is just five percent of the whole of our fantastic and wondrous greater reality. But our genuine lives are in fact eternal. So, where do we live eternally? Why, in the other 95% of our greater reality, of course, and it turns out to be not “dark” at all. And because all that exists is consciousness, just as our dear and brilliant friend Max Planck realized, and since consciousness is an energy-like potentiality that vibrates, every level of the greater reality that we inhabit in our eternity seems in fact to exist in more or less exactly the same place where we are right now, but just all at different rates of vibration. Let’s you and me take a quick tour of what those Luddite mainstream scientific gatekeepers have spent a century telling us is just a reality that is 95% full of “dark nothing”:
* This material universe is almost certainly at the lowest inhabited consciousness vibration. From our genuine lives in the greater and actually-not-dark-at-all reality, we treat this lowest material level, which from here seems to be so important, as just a school in which we plan brief lives of learning and growth, and from which we then gladly return to our true homes on the higher consciousness levels. That is the reason why this level is “material”. If it were not protected by all those tiny whirling subatomic “particles”, our powerful minds could much more easily mess with it, and we could make the matter move around at will and thereby cheat on our lessons. Everything that is above this material level is not material at all, so it would of course look “dark” to materialist physicists; but those upper levels are lighter and lighter, the higher they vibrate, since they are lit by the intense consciousness light based in love that radiates from the highest vibratory levels.
* The Outer Darkness Levels are what we refer to as Level One. We afterlife researchers refer for convenience to seven primary levels of the afterlife, each of which may contain many vibratory sub-levels. Next above this material level come a few very-low-vibration sub-levels which are cold, dark, smelly, and disgusting. Jesus in the Gospels refers to them as “the Outer Darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth” (MT 8:12). These lowest non-material sub-levels are very negative areas from which we have to be rescued if we ever fall so far, and you might think of them as punishment levels, but no one can put us there but ourselves. We can end up in the Outer Darkness if, in our post-death Life Review, we have trouble forgiving ourselves for something that we did in our lifetime just completed.
* Level Two is the Recovery Level. This is a small group of plain and very dimly-lit vibratory sub-levels, and many of those who live here in hovels are recovering from having been rescued from the Outer Darkness.
* Level Three is the Entry Level. The first of what the Vikings called the three Summerland Levels is a collection of much brighter and truly beautiful vibratory sub-levels which look amazingly earth-like, full of flowers and flowing water and busy with birds, butterflies, and small animals, but with one difference from the earth: none of the colors are what you would expect, and many are even beyond the visible-light spectrum so you never have seen them on earth. Even people who can vibrate much higher than Level Three will return from having lived an earth-life and re-enter the afterlife at Level Three, so the afterlife reception area is at this level, as is the place beside a flowing river full of iridescent fish and with deer grazing nearby where Jesus greets the returning arrivals who want to see Him.
* Levels Four and Five complete the Summerland. We don’t know whether it might be a hundred different vibrational levels, or a thousand such levels of consciousness that make up the Summerland, which were arbitrarily collected into those three levels by afterlife researchers back n the twentieth century for conversational purposes, but the levels are ever more beautiful the higher your own level of spiritual development will allow you to go comfortably. It is always easy to go lower, but it is unbearable to go higher because the stronger energy at each level above whatever you have spiritually attained feels like an overwhelming battering. And you very badly want to travel higher! No less an exalted traveler soon after his death than Thomas Jefferson told us through a medium how incredibly beautiful he found the Summerland to be.
* Level Six is the Causal Level. Just below the Source Level are some very high-vibration levels where people live who are so advanced spiritually that they are now completing their own spiritual perfection, as they prepare themselves to perhaps join the Source at Level Seven. Afterlife Researchers who first figured out these levels a century or more ago also called the Sixth Level the Causal Level, because that is the level where the Beings are who create every flower, every building, every tree that decorates the well-populated levels below. If you ever decide to build for yourself or someone you love a post-death home, you will design it, and then three or four Sixth-Level Beings will come and study your plans and then think it into existence.
* Level Seven is the Source Level. Eventually, when each of us has fully perfected ourselves spiritually and has therefore risen through all the consciousness vibratory levels, we will probably choose to join the Source at Level Seven.
I say “probably,” because eventually joining the Source and helping to maintain this whole Greater Reality is apparently going to be up to each of us. Jesus chose not to return to the Source, which He could have done, and I know from Thomas now that our greater reality is not the only greater reality and that Consciousness extends even above the Source of this universe, I can recall when I first began to do all this research half a century ago, when I thought that everything was a lot more straightforward and automatic than we now know that it is. For one small fact, we now realize that for as many as 24% of those who die on earth, the transition to the afterlife is neither immediate nor automatic. And for another fact, the “Source” is not actually God, but rather Consciousness – and therefore God – extends even above the Seventh Level.
And still, the scientific community is so determined never to find the Christian God that it continues to insist that physicists must study only the five percent of reality that is material and has been proven – they believe! – not to contain God discoverably. Speaking of which, perhaps we should mention that our frame verse for today was reportedly played by the band on the deck of the Titanic as that ship was slipping beneath the waves. Seems appropriate, don’t you think, for serenading a mainstream physics community that still is so determined to remain clueless? Although their foolishness is no more than an inconvenience at this point. Very soon now, there will come that blessed year – highly embarrassing for all the scientific gatekeepers, as it will be – when a young quantum physicist or two will demonstrate what “dark” matter and “dark” energy actually are, and then soon thereafter a sensible theory of everything will at last be born. But meanwhile, perhaps next week we ought to talk about how people whose material bodies have just died on earth are helped to go gladly home to those “dark” aspects of the greater reality, which in fact are pretty much exactly where we are right now!
Then, with my waking thoughts bright with thy praise,
out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;
so by my woes to be nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly,
still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

Absolutely brilliant Roberta. Loved this. Thank you. 🤍
Absolutely brilliant Roberta. Loved this. Thank you. 🤍
Dear Roberta,
Thanks for the superb post on a very interesting topic. Max Planck’s thoughts on the primacy of consciousness are compelling and will stand the test of time. Enrico Fermi is another example of the type of thinker we need to “turn loose” on the “dark matter” and “dark energy” problems. Fermi ( born in 1901) was one of the few people in history who knew every aspect of what was known about the entirety of physics by the time he was a young man in his 20s. He constructed the first working nuclear reactor out of a lattice of graphite blocks and metallic uranium spheres, using a slide rule for calculations and neutron-absorbing cadmium strips to control the nuclear reaction. In his spare time, he was able to mathematically show that the neutrino should exist, but proof had to wait on more sensitive detecting equipment. Fermi was able to notice that there was something “missing” in a particular nuclear process that led him to make new discoveries by inference alone. He was apparently not hindered by supervisors who limited his explorations or his academic standing. If he was around today he’d probably be all over the “dark matter/energy” problems. I imagine Max Planck would be right there with him! Brainpower didn’t end with Fermi and Planck. Look at a guy like Bernardo Kastrup if proof is needed! If we could allow (and fund) our available scientific talent to address the dark matter/energy problems we might get initial answers and data that are so unexpected that exploration into “unscientific” realms would need to be pursued to fine-tune the explanations. It would take courage and open-mindedness for mainstream scientists to consider the involvement of people with different skill sets (psychics, remote viewers, etc). The mainstream scientists of today are immersed in a materialist mindset that is so dogmatic it won’t entertain any other mode of thinking. The concept of a Godhead is often dismissed out of hand, and anyone who brings it up is
ostracized and ridiculed.
Consciousness, when thought of as the fabric of everything, takes time and effort to assimilate as a new concept among people trained/indoctrinated as materialists. The dark matter/dark energy problem is a mystery that should be garnering a huge amount of scientific attention. For the scientific community to essentially throw up their hands and indicate that it’s “too hard” or “defies current known principles of analysis” is intellectually lazy and/or disingenuous. Frankly, I don’t expect to see a paradigm shift in the scientific community any time soon.
Hi Mark,
Thank you for your erudite comment above, it sheds light on those brave thinkers who had the honesty to truly explore the unknown.
(Why do I picture the Starship Enterprise here!?)
I’ve looked at some of Bernardo Kastrup and I love his fearless work on consciousness. He is a great example of how to tackle the concept of mind, that is ‘more’ than the physical human brain.
Thanks for sharing Enrico Fermi (b.1901) as an example of discovery via inference alone. I find your explanation interesting, that a truly brilliant and free mind can overcome the naysayers of his time; postulating the existence of the neutrino, before sensitive equipment to detect it was even invented. What an amazing mind Fermi must have had!
And I am sure you are correct when you say long-conditioned materialists would need to take time, should they choose to examine consciousness-as-the-fabric-of-everything.
Would many lazy thinkers among the material, atheist scientific throng even try?
It is sobering Mark, that you don’t see a major shift in the scientific community in the near future. This seems true of many human institutions in this world. Sadly we humans are too content with habitual thinking.
Oh well, I can still hope for an unexpected genius-level breakthrough device, that can say, communicate with people who have died as proof of the endurance of consciousness…
Although this would change the world and astonish human beings long steeped in nihilism – I’m not naive enough to hope for it any time soon. 🙏🏼🌏
Dearest Roberta,
If only scientists had the sincere desire for discovery to attempt the study consciousness! (I mean everything we perceive and reason uses our human consciousness anyway.) Since consciousness makes up so much of the human condition it has got to be worth studying, right?
I gather one would need different ‘tools’ to access it: One may need to delve deeply into differing aspects of consciousness, instead of employing the tools used for conventional physics, grosser measurable energies, gravity and magnetism that we currently study.
To look into differing ‘types’ of consciousness would involve studying mediumship, psychic energy, remote viewing, lucid dreaming, astral states and meditation states…etc..
So our modern scientists would have to lift their game, as it were.
Instead of looking away from these ‘alternative’ areas true scientists could face them squarely and develop methods of inquiry suited to consciousness.
So far, those brave individuals who study consciousness are pariahs of the scientific establishment. Perspectives really need to change!
Efrem,
Nicely put! I should have read your post first! I completely agree.
Studying Consciousness is almost certainly where we need to be heading. The tools will vary from those used to study any branch of physics as will the thought process. Attempting to stick solely with the materialist paradigm isn’t going to be sufficient.
